Acne Rosacea Symptoms

Acne rosacea has a wide variety of signs and symptoms, which can vary substantially from one individual to another. Acne rosacea always includes at least one of the following primary signs, while a number of secondary signs and symptoms may also develop.

Frequent blushing or flushing appear in the history of many people with acne rosacea. Often the earliest sign of the disorder, this facial redness may come and go, and may not seem to be much of a nuisance. Another common sign is a blush or a sunburn that doesn’t seem to go away be warned, this is no ordinary facial redness. In addition to the flushing and redness, small red solid bumps or pus-filled pimples frequently develop. Unlike acne vulgaris, or “teenage zits,” acne rosacea generally does not produce blackheads, and the skin may burn or sting. In many people with acne rosacea, small blood vessels or spider veins become visible on the skin.

In addition to the primary symptoms, many people with rosacea may experience eye irritation, known as ocular rosacea. The eyelids also may become red and swollen, and styes are common. Without medical help, in the most severe cases of acne rosacea, the corneas can be damaged and vision loss may result.

The face may feel tight. The center of the face may become rough, and appear to be very dry, and raised red patches (plaques) may develop without changes in the surrounding skin. The skin may thicken and enlarge from excess tissue, most commonly on the nose. This condition, known as rhinophyma, affects more men than women. Facial edema, or swelling, may show up along with these other signs, or the swelling may occur independently in the absence of other symptoms. Acne rosacea signs and symptoms may also develop in areas other than the face, most commonly on the neck, chest, scalp or ears.

Acne rosacea patients may experience any combination of these characteristics at the same time, and sometimes they may develop in succession. Each individual sign or symptom of acne rosacea may progress from mild to moderate to severe. Early diagnosis and treatment are recommended early intervention may reduce the severity of any lasting skin changes.
